The New Mexico State Chapter of USAS is working hard to educate and inform students and the public about harmful working conditions throughout the world. More than that we want to be in solidarity with women working in sweatshops.

In
a paper written by Dr. David Boje (chapter advisor), there is a
methodology for finding out who makes NMSU clothing, and how to find
the stories of the women who make our clothing. He also outlines a new
code of conduct proposed for NMSU apparel licensing. The paper
titled "
Are New Mexico State garments made in sweatshops?" discusses
some the findings about the apparel found in campus stores and a new
code of conduct.
USAS also examines the monitoring practices
performed by companies and industries. When women speak for
themselves, we will not need monitors. For more information on
monitoring see Monitoring
By Dr. David Boje.![]()
| NMSU MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING UP WHEN SWEATSHOP WAGE WORKERS MAKE MAKE OUR NMSU BOOKSTORE CLOTHING: "Tough Anti-Sweatshop Bill Approved On September 29, California Governor Gary Davis signed a pioneering bill to tackle sweatshop abuses in the state’s $30 billion garment industry. Bill 633 imposes a "wage guarantee" requiring manufacturers, and retailers who make their own private label apparel, to pay workers the minimum wage and overtime compensation when their contractors fail to do so. It also gives garment workers a process to quickly recover their unpaid wages. The bill is the result of a ten year campaign by garment workers and advocacy groups and lengthy negotiations with manufacturers and retailers. According to Sweatshop Watch, the bill is a major breakthrough because it recognizes the responsibility of manufacturers and retailers for the labour practices of their contractors" (From Maquiladora Solidarity). | |
