Petition for a Sweat-free New Mexico State University Campus

  • GOAL: End sweatshops in the $30 billion apparel, and the $2.5 billion collegiate garment industries, by promoting awareness, taking non-violent (peaceful) action, distributing info and flyers, and moving beyond the FLA (corporate-controlled PR) to the Workers Right Consortium methodology for sweatshop monitoring at New Mexico State University.
  • This is a petition of Students, Faculty, and Staff who support an investigation of clothing being sold at the NMSU bookstore. IS OUR UNIVERSITY LOGO ON SWEATSHOP GARMENTS?
  • We are campaigning for a stricter CODE OF CONDUCT for bookstore garment purchases.

Petition for a sweat-free NMSU campus

Attn: Administration, Students, Staff and Faculty:

We, the members of the University community, wish to urge NMSU to adopt a strong and comprehensive NO SWEATSHOP Code of Conduct for apparel licensees of NMSU. This Code of Conduct should be designed to set standards for working conditions in the factories where NMSU licensed apparel is made, and include the following provisions:

  1. Workers should be paid a living wage allowing them to meet their basic needs.
  2. Workers should be free from all forced overtime, harassment, abuse and discrimination.
  3. Workers should have the right to a safe and healthy work environment.
  4. Workers should have the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining.
  5. NMSU should make licensees publicly disclose the names and addresses of all factories or contractors they used to make University of NMSU licensed apparel.
